PETER MAX

ART AVAILABLE FOR ACQUISITION

Naples, FL – (February 2012) – An impressive collection by artist legend, Peter Max’s exquisite paintings will be on exhibition and available for acquisition at the Mercato Shops in Naples, FL . The exhibition will present Max’s newest works, and coincides with a donation of Max’s custom Baldwin Baby Grand piano, which was given to Ringo Starr. The piano, which is signed by both Starr and Paul McCartney was auctioned off at this year’s MusicCares dinner honoring Paul McCartney on February 12, the day prior to the Grammy Awards.

One of highlights of The Grammy’s MusiCares dinner honoring Sir Paul McCartney was the sale of a Pop art icon Peter Max’s boldly colored red and blue Baldwin Grand piano. Peter Max was to art what The Beatles were to music. As The Beatles sang of the surreal characters in Sergeant Pepper, Max’s bold beautiful colors painted a world of cosmic fantasy.

Peter painted the piano for Beatle Ringo Starr when he visited Peter’s studio a few years ago.. Recently, Ringo called Peter to suggest they donate the piano to MusiCares, whose mission is to help musicians in need. The piano sold for $175,000.

Max has been friends with the Beatles for a very long time. When The Beatles made the world aware of the Maharaja in India, Peter help bring Swami Satchidananda to America. The Beatles – Max connection started decades ago and continues today.
Max presented the piano to Starr during a visit to Max’s New York City studios while Starr was on tour in 2005. The piano features Max’s trademark colors and brushwork, with bright orange/red legs and top and a sky blue body. The top is adorned with flowers, while the headboard has stars over a purple blue background. Starr then had the piano shipped to Chicago, where he performed the first song he ever wrote, “Don’t Pass Me By,” for a PBS Soundstage taping.
The piano is a one of kind original, painted by an icon and played by two of the world’s greatest and most beloved musicians. It is their hope and pleasure to give to it to MusicCares.
The gallery welcomes all Peter Max enthusiasts and collectors, as exhibit previews begin Saturday, February 18 and the exhibit extends through Sunday afternoon, February 26.

Bernie Taupin is typically heard not seen, due to the songwriter’s long-running collaboration with Elton John, a partnership that dates back to 1967 when both answered the same ad in a music magazine seeking new talent. Save for a brief break, the two have worked together since: Taupin, 61, providing lyrics, John providing music and the stage-ready persona. As a kid growing up in England, though, Taupin was encouraged in the visual arts as well, a pursuit he wasn’t able to pursue fully until his success in music afforded him the time and space to create large and colorful canvases. These days, visual art takes up more of his time than songwriting, he says. Though, again, he remains largely out of sight, letting his canvases play the flashy frontman. Taupin will visit next weekend for an exhibit of his work that opens today. He talked about his dual creative pursuits.

Q: From what I’ve seen, you like changing form from canvas to canvas, but big bright colors seem to unite your work.

A: Yes, it’s changing constantly. It all travels in the same abstract vein, because I’m of the mind set where I enjoy experimenting with different things. But I do like big bright cans of colors. If there’s a central force of my work, it’s those big bright colors. Everything else gravitates around that.

Q: I’m intrigued by the titles, which remind me of song titles. Blood and Moneyoriginally made me envision something old and Western – and I know you have an affinity for old cowboy culture. But when I look at it, I see skyscrapers.

A: That’s very funny, and I’ll let you in on a secret: It was meant to be very corporate, to symbolize money and greed. The slashes of green and red and blood and money. But more often I’d rather not let somebody in on these. I’d rather ask them what it means to them. It’s like the old adage about other people’s interpretation of your own work is more interesting than your own. Artists and songwriters alike would say the same thing.

Q: Both allow you a certain anonymity. Elton is a vessel for the lyrics, and the paint and canvas do the same for the art.

A: Yes, I’m very solitary in the way I work and the way I live. Both things I’m known for, there’s no one else around when you’re doing them. I work on my own with no other distractions. My professions are very solitary. And that’s by design.

Q: Were you that way growing up?

A: Oh yeah, I was always a loner. I liked solitude and privacy. I’m not a tremendously social person. What anonymity I do have I’ve created and responsible for and guilty of and happy with.

Q: Did that come in part from growing up in a small town?

A: Oh, it wasn’t a small town, friend, it was the middle of nowhere. It was the middle of nowhere, and I gravitated toward a small village. I never had the luxury of any of the entertainment value of cities or even towns. When I was a kid, I never went to the movies. Everything I did, I created through myself. I made my own entertainment.

Q: But your success with Elton in the ‘70s allowed you to see the world.

A: Yes, it’s funny people asking about my art often ask why did I start so late in life. The thing is, for a lot of my life I lived in a transient state. There was no rooting. I didn’t put my feet down anywhere. It wasn’t until 20 years ago that I sort of found this place where I’m at now that I could open up and find space to create things I wanted to create. I always knew I didn’t want to sit with my little tiny canvas and do oil paintings on the side of the road. I wanted to make big, bold statements. I finally found an outlet for it.

Q: Do you wake up on an average morning and have to decide which hat to put on?

A: Good question. (Laughs.) I suppose in a way, well, the thing is no. I spend far more time creating artwork than creating songs. Songs I really only work on when a project comes along. For instance, we’re working currently – it’s why I’ve been so crazy lately – Elton and I are going into the studio in a couple of weeks with the intention of throwing stuff at the wall and seeing if it sticks. So I’ve been busy working on the songwriting side of things lately. But it only lasts as long as the time it takes to make a record. I’m certainly not the sort that gets up and goes, “I want to write a song.” If there’s a movie I’m asked to work on, or something of that nature, sure. But I spend much more time in the studio.

From 1960-73, young Christine Argillet would spend her summers with her father in Spain, staying close to the home of the artist Salvador Dali.

Pierre Argillet, who was the primary publisher of Dali’s prints for most of his career, liked to stay close to Dali in order to insure that Dali produced the work he had promised.

“Dali had sometimes very strange ways,” Christine Argillet said. “My father got mad a few times. He decided we would go in summer and spend July and August in Spain near Dali’s house.”

Now some of the work Dali produced in those years is coming to Avondale Artworks Gallery beginning today. About 90 prints, which belonged to her father, who died 10 years ago, will be offered for sale through Saturday, Christine Argillet said.

Most of those prints date from 1960-73. But some older works Dali made to illustrate “The Songs of Malador” will be included in the exhibit.

“The Songs of Malador” was a novel in verse written about 1869 by the Comte de Lautréamont, the pseudonym of Isidore Lucien Ducasse, an Uruguayan-born French novelist. When he wrote “the Surrealist manifesto” in 1924, he quoted a line from the novel: “As beautiful as the random encounter between an umbrella and a sewing-machine upon a dissecting-table.”

Surrealism had emerged as a dominant artistic movement in the 1920s. Dali, one of the leading Surrealist artists, did a series of prints in 1934 to illustrate an edition of “The Songs of Malador” in 1934.

“It’s very rebellious work,” Argillet said. “When Dali etched these works, he was young and in that spirit.”

Dali did 50 illustrations for “Songs of Malador.” Prints of 15 will be in the Jacksonville exhibit.

Also in the exhibit will be 16 large pieces from a 1963-65 Greek mythology series Dali did, Argillet said.

The man she got to know from 1960-73 was “a very modest, very humble man, who worked a lot,” Argillet said. “What was amazing for me as a kid is that he was always inventing things with something he had in hand. His capacity to transform daily life into something wonderful was very visible.”

About Pierre Matisse:
Who is Pierre Henri Matisse? The answer seems to be as complex as his life. With a most extraordinary view of the world, Pierre has brought his journey into focus using art to express his varied experiences. Having lived the entire spectrum of emotions, it is no surprise that his work reflects passion, beauty, joy, love and freedom. One is drawn to Pierre’s work because of its intensity, power and… depth of color, however on closer inspection, the drama of the scene plays out until it feels as though you are part of the picture. As with most projects, first there needs to be an idea. In this particular instance Pierre H. Matisse, The Idea Man, is also an integral part of the story.

Pierre was born to artist parents in Paris on February 1st, 1928. His father, Jean Matisse, was a sculptor, his mother, Louise Milhau, was a painter, sculptor and ceramist. He grew up immersed in the world of art and in the world of Henri Matisse. Pierre’s childhood involved the artistic life of Paris and the French Riviera. The Matisse family often moved, “entourage” from one location to another, in France and Spain during his early years. He had the opportunity to meet and spend time among some of the most famous artists of this century, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Aristide Maillol, Jean Effel, Salvador Dali, Pierre Bonnard, Marcel Duchamp, Henri Matisse, Fernand Leger, Maurice De Vlaminck and Auguste Lumière.

As a teenager, he was involved in a world that dealt with cruelty, intrigue, horror, and the destruction of war. Both Pierre and his father, Jean Matisse, were heavily involved in French underground activities. Before the war ended, his grandmother and aunt had been imprisoned for their subversive activities. Both Pierre, and his father, were on the run from the Nazis for their efforts in aiding the British spies and saboteurs. Occasionally they engaged in their own sabotage efforts. Some of these stories are amazing!

At the age of sixteen, on D-Day, during the invasion, Pierre found himself in Normandy forty miles from the landing beaches. For weeks he was caught in the German lines. Next, in no-man’s land, between the allies and the Nazis forces trying to get back to the British. Once liberated, he served as translator between the British and French authorities. He then volunteered, serving in co-operation with the British military transport, to repatriate the French civilian refugees displaced by the Normandy battle.
When the war ended, he worked in the restoration of the art and historical monuments damaged by the war in France. At nineteen, he volunteered for a French commando paratrooper outfit, engaged in North Africa. Part of his division was sent to Indochina. Pierre fought in Algeria. Eventually earning a PhD. in antique furniture restoration and authentication after his return from duty.

He is quite an adventurer, both a sailor and a pilot. France was already turning socialist and communist in the early 50′s and this was certainly not bringing the freedom that everyone had fought and sacrificed for. This, Pierre struck out to Canada with his family. He was a settler in the wilderness of the Canadian frontier. Pierre is international in his thinking with ties to France and Canada. He has a variety of societies in his ancestry: French, some traceable back to Charlemagne, German and Spanish, in fact some of his ancestors were Mediterranean pirates.

Pierre is a man who has not lost the sense of wonder of life, inquisitive, full of energy and open to every possibility, sure in his knowledge of himself, truly his own man.

As an artist, Pierre has always pursued his work in a generous manner. Giving an entire series of Florida landscapes to the Deland Museum, which have become a part of their permanent collection. These paintings were executed in the 70′s to record, for future generations, an ecology on the St John’s River that is quickly disappearing. He has also given or created commissioned pieces to help many other organizations such as Project Hope, The American Red Cross, Variety Clubs International, The National Epilepsy Foundation, Music Educators National Conference and Fame, UNICEF Orphans foundation, The Sunrise Children’s Hospital of Las Vegas, The Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital, The Denver Children’s Hospital, Make-A-Wish Foundation, A Community of Angels, The United Nation’s Women’s Guild, Code Amber Organization, The Boggy Creek Gang, The Hole-in-the-Wall Gang and Hearts for Heroes, and many others.

After twenty years as a cartographic manager, for a government agency, Pierre, to put it in his own words “retired from conventional work.” For a character like him, idleness is an anathema, so now Pierre is using his creative talent and boundless energy painting, writing, teaching and refining an art form known as cuts outs and translating different mediums into new avant garde mixed media. Today the dream and plans for this new artistic exploration and using his art to help others has become the driving force in Pierre’s life. Above all, Pierre believes in freedom… as do all artists.

Her television credits include the Emmy® Award winning performance in Onassis: The Richest Man in the World as Maria Callas, East of Eden for which she was awarded a Golden Globe®, the mini-series War and Remembrance and her Golden Globe® winning role as “Dr. Quinn” on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman which ran for six seasons. Additionally Seymour appeared on the Emmy® nominated Dancing With The Stars. Her most recent projects include Austenland, Love, Wedding, Marriage, Perfectly Prudence and stars in the upcoming ABC Family movie Elixir.

Daughter of a British obstetrician and his Dutch wife, Jane was born in Hillingdon, England and raised in Wimbledon. She began training in dance at an early age, and was just thirteen when she made her professional debut with the London Festival Ballet. That same year, she entered the Arts Educational Trust for dance, music and theatre training and danced with the visiting Kirov Ballet at Covent Garden.

In addition to acting, Jane has written over 10 books including Among Angels, Open Hearts, Making Yourself At Home, Remarkable Changes and This One ’N That One, a series of children’s books written with her husband James Keach which is now being made into an animated television series from their production company PCH Films. As well, she has launched Jane Seymour Designs, a national lifestyle brand inspired by her homes, art and family-centered lifestyle.

When she is not acting, writing or designing, Seymour can be found in her painting studio. With a thriving career as an artist and her own art gallery in Los Angeles, she has exhibited in numerous galleries and venues across North America. Over the past eighteen years she has created an intimate world of delicate watercolors, colorful vibrant oil paintings, pastels and bronze sculptures and has accepted select private commissions. She continues to reach new artistic levels by continually developing her technique, style and subject matter.

Her art also serves as inspiration for “Open Hearts by Jane Seymour®”, a jewelry line for Kay® Jewelers and Jared® the Galleria of Jewelry. Inspired by Seymour’s original paintings of two hearts connected and open at either end, the exclusive designs symbolize that love has no boundaries and flows unconditionally. The open heart design reminds us that if we keep our hearts open, love will always find its way in. It is the universal symbol for giving and receiving love. Seymour’s Open Heart philosophy reflects her mother’s advice that only when you keep your heart open can you best give and receive love.
It is also the driving force behind www.keepanopenheart.com, which provides an online forum for people to discuss how living with an open heart has changed their lives.

Seymour is involved in many philanthropic causes including Childhelp, American Red Cross, City Hearts and Camp Soaring Eagle. In addition to the charitable work that Seymour does with these notable organizations, she and husband James Keach have partnered to launch the Open Hearts Foundation to benefit children in need.

Seymour resides in Malibu, California with her husband James Keach and their children.

“Without Bernie Taupin, there would be no Elton John”-Elton John

Bernie Taupin and Elton John. A forty year collaboration that continues…and unlike any other the music world has ever seen.

According to Elton John, “Without Bernie, basically, there wouldn’t have been an Elton John. I mean, without that stroke of good fortune and kismet as it were, Elton John probably wouldn’t have happened. I’m just a purveyor of Bernie’s feelings, Bernie’s thoughts.”

Off the Wall Gallery is deeply honored to present, in its Houston, Texas premiere, an extraordinary collection of artwork created by Mr. Taupin, whose creative passions have allowed him to equally master yet another form of artistic expression…and that is the other artist in him, the one with the brushes and paints; the one that creates emotive canvases. Contemporary works of art that dually speak to one’s intellect and one’s emotions: rich in color and expression… a cryptic social commentary captured in multi-media form.

Houston, Texas: December, 2011: Off the Wall Gallery, Houston’s premier Fine Art Gallery, presents “Beyond Words”, an extraordinary collection of contemporary artworks by legendary songwriter and lyricist Bernie Taupin for what promises to be the single most important art event of 2012 in Houston.

Beginning on Saturday, February 4, 2012, the public will be able to preview the artwork at Off the Wall Gallery located at the Galleria in Houston. Exhibition previews will run from February 4th through February 12, with special appearances by Bernie Taupin on Saturday, February 11 from 6-8 pm and Sunday, February 12 from 2-4pm.

Confinement Visitors

Taupin describes his art: “Canvas to me is simply the visual extension of what I have spent my life creating through words. The imagination, in my estimation, is the most powerful tool the artist possesses enabling us to conjure up beautiful distraction for the ears and eyes.
I have no formula except that which comes from what I dream, feel and see. To me colors are like words…they express emotions…likewise texture and mediums display an abundance of moods.”
For years Bernie Taupin has extended his art beyond his lyrics and onto the canvas. Through painting, Bernie has expanded his artistic horizons into frontiers where words have given way to his broad palette of color, where timing and cadence once served, now texture and the gesture of his brush bring his vision into a new dimension.

Salvador Dali’s publisher, Pierre Argillet (1910-2001) and Dali enjoyed a collaboration and a friendship that spanned five decades; and produced what art historians have termed “the finest bodies of the Master’s Art”. This collection made available by the Argillet Estate is…truly..a privilege and an opportunity for the collector to own a prominent piece of Dali’s legacy.

Pierre Argillet’s body of Dali’s etchings, original works and books appear in museums throughout the world, and have enjoyed a home at the Museum of Surrealism in Melun, France (Pierre Argillet’s former home “Chateau Vaux-le-Penil” and former museum) as well as in the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. The collection is also housed at the prestigious Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Together, Argillet & Dali created remarkable editions of original prints, lived the true “Surrealists” life, and developed images that are prized by collectors today.

This exhibition and collection opportunity offers works from Dali’s Suites, including Mythologie, Les Hippies, Goethe’s Faust, and the incomparable Poemes Secrets d’Apollinaire. Madame Argillet has also graciously included the rare titles, Etchings and Watercolors from 1934 to the late 1960′s, as well as the magnificent Aubusson Tapestries created in 1973, simultaneously with the opening of The Dali Museum (Teatro Museo) in Figueres, Spain (1974) and Pierre Argillet’s Museum in Melun, France (1973). Housed in this collection is “Femmes dans les Vagues“, 1972, a hand-woven Aubusson that leaves one breathless.
